Finnish-Swedish art historian Osvald Siren (1879--1966) was one of the pioneers of Chinese art scholarship in the West. This biography focuses on his four major voyages to East Asia: 1918, 1921--1923, 1929--1930, and 1935. This was a pivotal period in Chinese archaeology, art studies, and the formation of Western collections of Chinese art. Siren gained international renown as a scholar of Italian art, particularly with his books on Leonardo da Vinci and Giotto. Yet when he was almost forty years old, he became captivated by Chinese art (paintings of Lohans in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston) to such an extent that he decided to start his career anew -- in a way. He has left his mark in several fields in Chinese art study: architecture, sculpture, painting, and garden art. This study charts Siren's itineraries during his travels in Japan, Korea, and China. It introduces the various people in those countries as well as in Europe and North America who defined the field in its early stages and were influential as collectors and dealers. Since Siren was a theosophist, the book also explores the impact of theosophical ideas in his work.

Buddhism in China gathers together for the first time the most central and influential papers of the great scholar of Chinese Buddhism, Erik Zürcher, presenting the results of his career-long profound studies following on the 1959 publication of his landmark The Buddhist Conquest of China . The translation and language of Buddhist scriptures in China, Buddhist interactions with Daoist traditions, the activities of Buddhists below elite social levels, continued interactions with Central Asia and lands to the west, and typological comparisons with Christianity are only some of the themes explored here. What price will North American business pay if it fails to develop an understanding of the role of East Asia in the transformation of global competition? Competition in this region has been intensifying as the pace of technological change speeds up and new competitors appear. Canada has major opportunities in its economic relation-ships with the rapidly emerging dynamic East Asian economies. But the diversity and dynamism of East Asia's capitalism must be understood by those who wish to meet their competitors there successfully. Understanding how and why businesses are organised the way they are, and how they are changing, will help considerably in penetrating East Asian markets. Asian business systems should be understood for their remarkable diversity, across economies as well as within economies. The essays in this book explain the origins and prospects of East Asia's major business players - the Japanese keiretsu, Korean chaebol, China's emerging industry structure and business groups, and family networks in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. Most Asian businesses emphasize cooperative business relations, based most often on family and other informal ties, and cooperation with the state. To identify future business partners, Canadian firms must understand the strategies of other firms and governments: the linkages between trade and investment; and innovative business systems and how to work with them. It examines the broader social, cultural and historical contexts of parental anxiety by analysing a series of socio-economic changes and population policy changes in post-reform China that contextualise parental experiences. Drawing on Wilkinson’s (2001) conceptualisation linking individual’s risk consciousness to anxiety, this book analyses the situated risk experiences of parents’ and grandparents’, looking particularly into their engagement with various types of media. It studies the representations of health issues and health-related risks in a parenting magazine, popular newspapers, commercial advertising and new media, as well as parents’ and grandparents’ engagement with and response to these media representations. By investigating ‘a culture of anxiety’ among parents and grandparents in contemporary China, this book seeks to add to the scholarship of contemporary parenthood in a non-Western context. .
